Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for older adults, and the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house: water, hard surfaces, tight spaces, and movements — stepping, turning, standing — that challenge balance. The good news is that bathroom falls are among the most preventable. Here is the room, in priority order.
1. The entry
Can you get in safely? Widen narrow doors if a walker does not fit (see doorway widening). Fix the threshold — lips and steps at the door catch toes. Add a nightlight in the hall: the 2 a.m. trip to a dark bathroom is a classic fall scenario.
2. The floor
Wet tile is the enemy. Slip-resistant flooring — textured tile, quality vinyl, or a professional anti-slip treatment — is the single biggest floor fix. Throw away the loose bath mat; it slides and bunches. Keep the path from shower to door clear and dry.
3. The tub or shower
The high tub wall is the highest-risk fixture in the house. Replace it with a walk-in tub or convert to a low-step shower. Add grab bars at the entry and along the wall — anchored to studs, placed for your actual movement. Add a seat and a handheld head so nobody stands on one wet foot.
4. The toilet
Rising from a low toilet is a fall moment. A comfort-height toilet plus a grab bar beside it solves it. Keep the paper within reach — overreaching twists balance.
5. Light and water
Bright, glare-free light everywhere, nightlights for after dark. An anti-scald valve so a temperature spike never causes a startled slip.
